“A Chaotic Moment in Time”
Crayola Wax on Masonite
18” x 24”
For this piece, I wanted to experiment with a technique rooted in the history of painting: encaustic. Dating back to ancient Greece and Egypt, encaustic painting uses heated wax mixed with pigment as a medium. It was traditionally used to preserve color, add richness, and reduce the cost of more expensive materials, while also creating a uniquely textured surface.
Drawing from this method, I sourced broken crayons from my high school’s storage closet and melted them down to create my own improvised “encaustic paint.” This process allowed me to explore both materiality and sustainability, transforming discarded objects into a functional and expressive medium. The result is a piece that reflects both historical influence and experimentation, and I think it successfully captures the depth and texture I was aiming for.
